“The Dirt On Jane” is Jane Fishman’s anti-memoir. It’s a tale of aging, a style of gardening, a rage at having to wear two pairs of glasses to read a map in the car. It’s a meditation in maintaining a sense of humor when visiting her mother in the assisted living facility and hearing someone ask, “When did you move in?” It’s a prayer for patience when her mother says, “All I want for Mother’s Day is for you to polish your nails with some Iced Mocha I bought on sale.” It’s a look at a life that is haphazard, loopy, fun and always in need of straightening. As a judge in the Savannah Garden Exposition once said of her ten-foot-by-twelve-foot faux garden entry “Delightful! Shows one doesn't have to spend a lot of money to enjoy gardening. Lacks cohesiveness.” For twenty years Jane Fishman has written a human interest column for the Savannah Morning News. She is the author of “Everyone’s Gotta Be Somewhere,” a collection of newspaper columns. She lives in Savannah, Georgia. ISBN 978-1-4675-0404-1

I've had the pleasure of reading Jane's columns over the last 20 years and even attending one of her plant swaps.
This book gives the reader the opportunity to delve further into her life and the growth of that life both as a nomad and nurturer.

I have enjoyed Jean Kerr and Erma Bombeck's views on life as they lived it and now as a woman of a certain age was drawn to Nora Ephron. Jane stands toe to toe with these ladies and even better, she's still with us and hopefully will write more.

The Dirt on Jane edition by Jane Fishman Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

This is a wonderfully observed, deftly written book! I loved the flow from humor to poignancy, from external to internal, from deeply personal to 'observational' - it's a lovely read and one you'll thoroughly enjoy. I found myself savoring a couple of stories each night before bed, and that was a perfect way to absorb both the twinkling winks written into some of the stories and the heart-stopping poignancy of others.
I loved learning about Jane. She's one of those people if I met, I'd save her for my collection. So many creative projects and a refreshing willingness to experiment with life. It's been some time since i first read The Dirt On Jane, and i remembered it as if it had pictures, which I am surprised to discover are all in words. Jane tells us of her life in Savannah, relationships with the neighbors, a magnificent garden and sculptures, and her move to Pittsburgh and back again. In the midst she speaks about her aging mother and her own thoughts on aging. I lent Jane's book to a friend and didn't remember to whom I'd lent it. But it was returned to me which is proof positive that said friend couldn't resist reading it, either. It's a perceptive, lighthearted, and disarmingly honest memoir.
OK, full disclosure. I have know this woman and her soul for a while, having lived in SAV, GA since 1989. (If Atlanta can be ATL, we can certainly have an initialized city name also.) So it was a delight to see names and places that I know. Plus, my husband and I grew up in Gainesville, FL and our daughter has been in Pittsburgh for over a year, so that was also fun to read about other places I know. (Tip Do NOT ever move to Marshall, TX, even if it is the hometown of Bill Moyers. But here's a column idea Bill Moyers' first job was with the Marshall News Messenger).

Jane's book is a treat because it is about all of us no matter where we have to be. Because it is about what we should all be doing, in a very basic way. Way beyond stopping to smell the roses. But yes, plants may be involved. Slow down and stay busy is what I call Jane's mantra. Know a little about a lot of things and a lot about some things. I learned so much about plants! And I thought I was already pretty knowledgeable in that area. Jane's book is like her newspaper column, always surprising and rewarding and leaves me with a lift to my qi, even if the subject is not obviously about life force rising.

Entertaining, informative, surprising, and quietly fiercely brave. Oh, yeah, it's got some stuff about aging in there. LOL, cause I often did when reading this slim gem. It's going in our box of local goodies this holiday to F&F.
THIS IS A STORY OF AN INTERESTING LIFE TOLD IN A PERSONAL AND OPEN WAY, RELATING AN OVER ALL PHILOSOPHY THAT CAN BE APPRECIATED AND USED BY ANYONE TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND VALUES IN THEIR OWN LIFE.
I had wanted this book for some time and perhaps my expectation was too high but I was disappointed in the book. It simply was not what I expected. I had hoped that it would have more information about Savannah and go a little deeper into the authors relationship with her aging mother.
